George Vezas – Nicotine Boys (2025)
Describing his music as “Oasis feels, but with switched on messages”, singer-songwriter George Vezas saunters through the realms of indie-rock, grunge, and classic rock with emotional, poignant and profound lyricism. Now, the single we’re about to review is his debut, but in the first few notes, you can feel a passion for music entwined with rough, raw, and chilling sentiments. Released via Manchester-based Flatland Recordings FLR, UK-based Vezas shares his single, ‘Nicotine Boys’.
Self-recorded and produced, George Vezas embraces a DIY approach to music production. From penning to composition, arrangement and performance, everything about ‘Nicotine Boys’ is a labour of love as he lays his soul bare in the five-minute song (give or take time-wise). With crashing drums, a bold bass, and soaring guitar, ‘Nicotine Boys’ hits you between the eyes from the outset with a blast of vintage grunge and indie-rock.
For me, ‘Nicotine Boys’ is a raw, hard-hitting wave of kaleidoscopic music intricately capturing the allure, power and essence of different musical genres. As with hard rock and grunge melodies, the rhythm of ‘Nicotine Boys’ is littered with individuality within a harmonic wrapper. While coming together in a skin-tingling symphony, each instrument stabs with prominence, demanding attention to the pulsating drums, steady bass, and stand-out guitar that enhances a heavier classic rock feel. Then, Vezas’ gritty and obscure slice offers a grimy but enlightening quality.
Melodically, the tune brims with bright colours but dwells in a dark well of tragedy, cynicism, and despair. Binding paranoia and anxiety in this “cautionary tale”, Vezas throws light on the sinister realm of “…the desolate scavengers, the nicotine boys and the hooker girls”.
