Julian Peterson – Since I Left You (2025)
With his soulful smile and somewhat sad eyes, singer-songwriter Julian Peterson exudes tender warmth – and that’s without even opening his mouth. When the songs begin, that’s when you feel truly comforted, like an old friend smiling across the table. Hailing from Canada, the musician, software developer, and founder of Essay walks through realms of old-school rock, binding alternative rock, indie-rock and country rock with twinkling charm. Join us as we delve into his most recent release, ‘Since I Left You’.
The first single since the 2020 EP Sight, ‘Since I Left You’ is Peterson’s return to the music scene – or at least the streaming side of things. Leaning far more toward an Americana style, ‘Since I Left You’ can fit on any Americana playlist; however, while the twang is etched in the track, a veil of alternative rock wraps the track with heavier grittiness. Produced by Gabriel Davis with mixing and recording by Milan Sakardi and mastering by Ryan Morey, the song is a well-polished melody, yet it has the rawness of a live session; a song made to filter through your speakers, but also transports you to the studio where you hear and feel the camaraderie of the various players.
Highly collaborative, ‘Since I Left You’ is a powerful interplay of several musicians each bringing their own vibe to the track while joining in harmonic unity. Michael Eckert’s pedal steel adds a warm tone that drives the Americana vibe, while Jeremiah Pick (electric guitar), Casey Pick (bass), and Julian Psihogios (drums) shine with alternative rock. Moreover, there is a duality of grit and smoothness in the vocals – Peterson’s rugged voice backed by Maggie Keogh’s soulful tone.
An intriguing melody with moving lyrics and an even more moving message, ‘Since I Left You’ is a poignant love song. While penned in the aftermath of a breakup, the track details the challenge of “…watching someone you love move on while you’re still sifting through the pieces…” Yet, in a brilliant twist of fate, the love song flips over as Peterson eventually married the fair lady who inspired the song deepening the poignant intimacy of the track.
Sincere, sentimental and honest, Peterson’s reflective tune captured my heart. I am eager to hear more from this musician and will definitely keep my eye on this rising musician.
