Julian Tcherassi – Darker Colors (2026)
With over 18 years of experience, performances at international festivals, critically acclaimed releases, a powerful stage presence, and a unique blend of flamenco, classical, and rock guitar, Julian Tcherassi fuses modern alternative energy with engaging music and meaningful lyrics. This is my introduction to Tcherassi, so I don’t have any expectations or idea of what will be blasting through my speakers. All I know is that the next few minutes of music will feature a flamenco guitarist and singer-songwriter hailing from Los Angeles. Join me as I hit play.
With diverse influences from Pink Floyd and Radiohead to Jeff Buckley and Mendeleyev, Tcherassi captures the core of rock music with classical precision and a Latin-flavoured flair. Following his singles ‘Death of the Universe’ and ‘Remembering’, ‘Darker Colors’ is five minutes of guitar goodness. A self-produced melody, Tcherassi’s single has a raw, off-kilter sound that is simultaneously elegant and imperfect, but there is a sophistication and charm in those rough edges.
While ‘Darker Colors’ has an organic, acoustic indie-rock guitar vibe, Tcherassi brings a heavier electric guitar, adding this clip of old-school rock to the flamenco-tinged playing. For me, however, ‘Darker Colors’ seems to lean away from the traditional Flamenco tone for the majority of the single; yet, he brings it all together in a push of Flamenco and vintage rock during the last few moments.
Melodically, Tcherassi’s ‘Darker Colors’ places you at a small live venue – intimate, vulnerable and profound. The off-kilter vocals bring obscurity to the single that simultaneously distorts and binds the single in a warm sonic wrapper. As I mentioned, this is quite an intimate song, but its profoundness is lifted by the empowering heart and hope in its theme. Tcherassi explains: “This is an uplifting song about moving on from the shadows of heartbreak and seeing the brighter colours of life at the end of a relationship.”
