June – Explodes (2025)
With raw emotional depth and a soft, tender tune, singer-songwriter June has that way of unpicking human fragility with a delicate embrace. We came across the Irish musician earlier this year with her debut single, ‘Up’. Even from this first moment, she began weaving a bright, kaleidoscopic tapestry with vivid, colourful genres entwined, showing individuality as well as overall harmony. From that day, we were taken with June’s way of holding your hand like an old friend, but simultaneously approaching like a shy girl who you know will become that old friend. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Explodes’.
With her previous singles, June held your hand and danced about with pop-inspired delight – each bringing a new flavour of pop with a strong folk-inspired whisper floating across; ‘Explodes’ continues to do this. Produced by Asher Condit, ‘Explodes’ is a bold fusion of contemporary folk-pop with slices of old-school Irish folk-inspired music kicking across the track. An acoustic guitar winks with obscurity in the melody, yet it is the percussion and steady drums that drive ‘Explodes’ with raw authenticity.
As with previous singles, a need to tap your toe or dance about brims from ‘Explodes’. In fact, I can easily imagine this being one of those tunes played around a campfire while you smile, twirl, and simply enjoy a moment of pure freedom. Passion bubbles in ‘Explodes’, and you can feel June’s soulful energy throughout the arrangement, particularly in her vocals. Hushed and soft, yet oozing confidence and strength, June highlights how simple, gentle whispers can be as powerful as the most bombastic shout.
So, my overall opinion of June and ‘Explodes’? Sincere, sentimental and heart-warming, ‘Explodes’ is another thread of kaleidoscopic music quietly building a powerful, innovative, and genuine discography. The song also continues to showcase June’s simultaneous simplicity and complexity as a singer-songwriter.
