Kelsie Kimberlin – Lady Liberty (2026)

Over the past few years, singer-songwriter Kelsie Kimberlin has used artistic expression to advocate for Ukrainians in the Russo-Ukraine war, from the pop-punk single ‘Vlad’ to the folk single ‘Infinite Possibilities’ and the award-winning documentary, The Last Message, Kimberlin explores the sufferings and celebrates the strength. Stepping into 2026 with her single ‘Champ’, she looked at the pride of a 16-year-old Ukrainian karate champion and the use of sports as a way of dealing with strife. Today, however, her second step into 2026 moves the lens from Ukraine to the USA with ‘Lady Liberty’.

Joined by Margot MacDonald, ‘Lady Liberty’ retains the alternative rock tone heard in ‘Champ’, but there is a deeper, heavier, more powerful weight pressing down in the rock-driven soundscape. Slow and steady, a united weave of drums, guitars, and a piano sets the course – all playing along in a mellifluous but dark attitude. Perfectly aligning with the tragic theme and portrayed suffering in ‘Lady Liberty’, the instruments offer a sense of despair with Kimberlin’s rich vocals threading through the track. Insert the haunting string section, and the violins reach into your soul with spine-chilling sensations.

A song of harrowing loss and confusion, ‘Lady Liberty’ explores the stripping of pride, strength and certainty of those lost in the supposedly free USA. Kimberlin explains: “As the daughter of an immigrant, I saw the pride my mother felt when she became an American citizen. Yet now, instead of pride, many immigrants are living in fear, and decent Americans are ashamed at the attacks on the fundamental liberties we all believe in.”

Considering the nature of the theme and the desperation of the tune, one can easily describe ‘Lady Liberty’ as a soundtrack to a film of destruction and devastation. However, and this is where there is a moment of duality, Kimberlin’s vocals and the orchestral element introduce acknowledgement of the situation, celebrating a greater clarity of what is happening and what needs to be done to overcome it.
