Track of the Day: Koentakhinte – When You’re Not Here (2026)
“I don’t write songs to tell people what to think. I write songs that invite them to discover what they think.” – the musical philosophy of singer-songwriter Koentakhinte; not wanting to provide answers, but to offer a tender connection to explore human experiences as they are for every being. We were introduced to Dutch musician Koentakhinte with his introspective, honest single ‘Quiet Colors’. Today, we take another step into his musical realm with ‘When You’re Not Here’.
As part of Koentakhinte’s Quiet Stories – an ongoing collection of songs about what it means to be human – ‘When You’re Not Here’ retains the solid folk tone of ‘Quiet Colors’; however, there appears to be something sadder, heavier, and more emotional in a wrapper of indie-folk meets alternative pop music. Moreover, the acoustic attitude that is distinctly Koentakhinte remains, but as much as there is familiarity, ‘When You’re Not Here’ is three-and-a-half minutes of refreshing newness. The same but different.
Self-produced, ‘When You’re Not Here’ brings the best of simplistic organic music to our ears. Hushed drums linger below while the acoustic guitar stands tall with its easy sound. While there’s a chilled-out quality to the track, it is restrained and almost tense. The stark presentation lays his soul bare, but a strange intricacy twinkles as poignant lyricism and intimate emotions come to the surface.
Unlike ‘Quiet Colors’ that “explored the quiet struggle to remain yourself in a world that prefers certainty…”, ‘When You’re Not Here’ ”…turns inward and examines identity through connection: who are we when someone deeply woven into our lives is no longer present?” Koentakhinte doesn’t offer clear answers with his music, and it’s evident in ‘When You’re Not Here’. While there is strong melodic clarity in a raw tune, the emotions run much deeper.
What can I say about Koentakhinte’s single ‘When You’re Not Here’? Sophisticated, sincere, moving and soul-stirring, but most of all raw and honest. From the outset, the song stole my breath, and by the end, its beauty had me crying. Highly recommended!
