Frank Joshua – Almost (2026)
From folk to jazz, soul, alternative rock, dream-pop and, well, a whole bunch of other genres, singer-songwriter Frank Joshua continues to surprise audiences with each of his singles. New and refreshing, but comfortable and familiar, Frank Joshua can hold you in a calm hug but also give you a pinch of cheeky mischief. With his 51st single, ‘Almost’ – yes, you read that correctly – Joshua shares that “one of the pleasures of having made this much music is that I’m less interested in deciding what genre a song ought to be in before we start…. yet it feels like I’ve somewhere slightly new to go.” Join us as we delve into this most recent single.
On the heels of his single ‘Houston’, ‘Almost’ has Frank Joshua reaching into the realm of pulsating electronic pop. Made for a dance floor, or perhaps the song to have you twirling about your bedroom with a grin, ‘Almost’ pumps with a heavy backbeat met by soaring, shimmering synths. It’s bright and fun, and the introduction of a saxophone as a guitar sneakily slips in, bringing a heart-warming tenderness with soulful vintage pop flair.
Produced with long-time collaborator Tony White, ‘Almost’, for me, was like a step back to the 1990s. It calms, soothes and sets a smile on your face; Joshua’s honey-soaked vocals hold you in a massive hug. Interestingly, while the melody and vibe are jolly, the lyricism and theme lean toward a melancholy nostalgia. He explains:
“’Almost’ is really about that strange territory between having something and losing it, or perhaps never quite having it in the first place. The relationships, possibilities and versions of ourselves that came close enough to feel real, but somehow remained just out of reach. Life rarely seems to divide itself neatly into happiness and sadness, success and failure, love and loss. Some of the things that stay with us longest are the things that nearly happened…”
