Lauren Minear – Bullshit (2025)
With a knack for translating human experience into moving melodies, singer-songwriter Lauren Minear finds that place in your brain where language doesn’t make sense and connects with an intriguing sound. Likened to artists like Sarah McLachlan and Joni Mitchell, her witty, intimate lyricism delves into the grittier areas of life; however, listening to Minear is like having a chat with a friend rather than merely playing a song. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Bullshit’.
Following her well-received singles, ‘Lightweight’ and ‘Protect You’, Minear is rejoined by producer David Weeks on ‘Bullshit’. For me, Minear’s music already kicks with the grittiness of life’s tragedies and the brush of life’s glory, but ‘Bullshit’ takes things to another level. Once again revelling in different flavours of pop with indie-pop and pop-rock entwined in a hard-hitting attitude; however, and this is a big however, Minear stomps across with a powerful rock-infused forcefulness in the arrangement.
An immersive track, ‘Bullshit’ tosses you into a sonic hurricane. The bold drums and guitars weave about you like the walls of the hurricane – each tentatively teetering on the edge of crashing down and crushing you. Yet, while Minear’s vocals are as aggressive, they act as an anchor in the ferocity of ‘Bullshit’. It’s as if she guides you along the urgent frenzy, navigating angst and making you feel that you are not alone.
‘Bullshit’ is perfect to attack every damning emotion involved with a rather difficult relationship. The interesting thing is, while it oozes darkness, the track is actually an expression of self-reflection, discovery, and letting go of the chains holding you back. Born from a therapy session where she uncovered “…the underlying need to always tailor her narrative…”, Minear was encouraged to write about it. She explains:
“These are feelings that I didn’t feel comfortable expressing for many years, and it feels great to finally get them heard. I think so much internal freedom comes from speaking your truth.”
