Love Ghost – Spirit Box (2025)
One of my favourite quotes is that of Love Ghost’s Finnegan Bell: “To me, on a deep level, music is a language for emotion… language can evoke emotion, but music hits you in the part of the brain that doesn’t have a capacity for language.” For me, this is something that sticks; it hits the nail on the head when you can’t quite describe the impact of music. Bell’s band, Love Ghost, has already caused a stir with their genre-defying blend of alternative rock, pop-punk, grunge, and even hip-hop, and this quote makes their sound even more definitive. Join me as I delve into their most recent release, ‘Spirit Box’.
Following the well-received singles ‘Sand Castles’ and ‘Scrapbook’, ‘Spirit Box’ is a wistful and innocent drawing on the beauty of simplistic acoustic sounds. Produced by Corin Batchelor, the track is primarily a classical piano quietly carrying you along a sparse melody – a true capturing of that barebones, honest emotion so elegantly expressed without any bells or whistles. While Bell can scream aloud in pop-punk and hold his own with rap-rock tunes, he showcases a softer, gentler tone in ‘Spirited Box’, dosing a rich voice with tender intimacy.
Almost entirely an acoustic melody featuring piano and vocals, ‘Spirit Box’ keeps you captivated in its subdued way; then the veil breaks with crashing drums and bold beats. Interestingly, as much as there is the rush of heavier music, the arrangement retains a skin-prickling sincerity oozing fragility and vulnerability. A shout-out to the haunting strings enhancing the sensitivity of ‘Spirit Box’.
A spirit box is considered a “medium used to speak to the afterlife…”, and Love Ghost’s ‘Spirit Box’ seems to cross that ethereal line between reality and fantasy.
In addition to the single, Love Ghost released an anime video for ‘Spirit Box’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
