Kirsten McKay – Hey! (2020)

Love, longing and personal insecurities are relatable topics that make for a great song. Kirsten McKay is taking her own spin on these topics and encapsulating them in her musical style with ‘Hey!’. Blending influences such as PJ Harvey, David Bowie and Kirsty MacColl, she adds her own unique flair and quirks to the mix. Her infectious style and sincerity stay with you long after the song ends.

While a newcomer to the solo music scene, McKay is already establishing herself. With her music geared toward her upcoming debut album Future Gratitudes, she is giving us a snippet of what to expect. She is ready to put herself out there and help you connect with these emotions through this single.

‘Hey!’ has this groovy opening that gets you gently moving to the beat from the first second. The melody has this wonderful groove to it that is enhanced by the use of horns. There is an almost jazzy vibe to the whole song that is so enjoyable. The different layers of the melody come together perfectly while getting some time in the limelight. The melodic arrangement is unbelievable and boosts the message of the track and helps you dash those insecurities.

While you are grooving to the melody, McKay’s vocals have a sultry smoothness to them. As she matches the jazzy vibes of the melody, she infuses her performance with sincerity and fun. She is also able to bolster the lyrics that make you feel good. The chorus is so catchy that you are going to be singing along before the song ends.

Kirsten McKay sets the bar for her upcoming album with the groovy feel-good vibes of ‘Hey!’. The single gets you grooving to the rhythm, swaying to the beat and generally having a blast. With this being the taster for the album, I can’t wait to hear the rest.
