Matthew Spreen – Narcistasia (2026)

Montreal-based Matthew Spreen steps out on his own with the new single, ‘Narcistasia’. A track that feels less like a typical single and more like a glimpse into someone’s inner creative world. Originally from Calgary and now part of the Montreal music scene, Spreen is also a member of the synth-driven band KZZZM, but this solo project is something much more personal. Written, recorded, mixed, and mastered in his bedroom studio, it’s DIY in the purest sense; intimate, experimental, and built entirely on his own instincts.

Right away, his voice grabs your attention. There’s a warm, slightly old-school crooner tone to it, the kind that makes you lean in and listen. It doesn’t try to impress; it just tells the story naturally, like he’s sitting across from you with a guitar in hand. And speaking of guitar, you can really tell that’s where Spreen feels at home. The structure of ‘Narcistasia’ is driven by intricate, looping patterns, especially when he keeps repeating the line, “you know it’s all about”. What could have felt simple instead becomes hypnotic, pulling you deeper into the song each time it comes back around.

The track slowly builds with subtle layers and textures. Think little ambient touches, careful production choices, and rhythms that sneak up on you. Spreen describes his process as starting with guitar and melody, then expanding outward with production ideas, and that’s exactly how ‘Narcistasia’ feels: like a core singer-songwriter moment that gradually grows into something more atmospheric and detailed.

He calls himself a poet first, guitarist second, producer third, and singer fourth. That order makes total sense here. The mood and the words lead the way, while everything else supports the emotion rather than overpowering it.

There’s a real sense of freedom in this project. No pressure to fit into a band sound, no need to follow trends, just one artist exploring ideas because they feel right. And that, honesty, is what makes ‘Narcistasia’ stand out. If you like reflective songwriting, gentle experimentation and music that feels handmade rather than manufactured, Matthew Spreen is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
