Michellar – Intersection (2024)
With an eclectic flair to her sonic palette, singer-songwriter Michellar veers from electronic pop to organic folk with effortless ease. We were introduced to the US-based musician with her indie-folk tune ‘LOVE EARTH’ – an evolution from the upbeat, pop tunes of ‘Cross My Heart’ and ‘Dance To Kill’. We learned to love her tousled web of indie-rock in ‘Conquer All With Love’ earlier this month. Today, however, we do not look to the future with Michellar or even skip back a couple of tunes; we head back to 2024 with her well-received single, ‘Intersection’.
A pivotal point in her musical evolution, ‘Intersection’ was Michellar’s first leaning into Americana and folk genres. Following a slip of indie-pop with ‘WARRIOR’, the step into poetic folk seemed practical and eventual; however, the shift of Americana quickens the pace with rock-inspired guitars and drums, as well as a smooth lingering of blues in the melody. For me, it is the banjo that really stands tall as it oscillates between upbeat finger-plucking and softer warmth in its harmonic weave.
Produced with Tobias Wilson, who also performed the vocals, ‘Intersection’ is the tender, heartwarming song you don’t expect from a banjo/honky-tonk style, but it fits so perfectly in an Americana playlist. Interestingly, the deep South eeriness flutters in ‘Intersection’; yet, its heel-clicking upbeat-ness matches the empowering, resilient, fresh with life theme. Michellar explains:
“I wanted to write a song that took me away from the sad realm I was in at the time. The story of love at first sight is one that I always believed in. That fleeting moment of finding the one person who you want to live the rest of your life has always been a magical place in my mind. I wanted to capture that magic in this song. That magic expressed and felt in a place where moments of danger can be all present at one time is a story that made me feel liberated from the woes in my life.”
