Track of the Day: Piper Connolly – body bag (2026)
Described as creating music that “sits at the intersection of pop-star instinct, pop-rock bite, and diaristic coming-of-age storytelling”, singer-songwriter Piper Connolly unpacks the boldness, brashness, and rambunctious chaos of, well, being human, as well as the vulnerability, fragility and emotional confusion that comes along. Not looking back at yesterday, she celebrates the grit, glory, triumph and tragedy of today and the future with zealous earnestness and rock star attitude. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘body bag’.
Dragging the 2000s pop-punk/ pop-rock style to modern-day audiences, US-based Connolly embraces the power of old-school Avril Lavigne in ‘body bag’. Hard-hitting, bold, abrupt and a bit of a punch to the chest, she comes at you at a rush; however, while ‘body bag’ is a sonic blast, there is an obscure soothing belying the melody.
Produced by Esjay Jones, Kevin Thrasher Gruft, and Nathan Datzler on mastering duties, ‘body bag’ finds that line between sophisticated punch and raw innocence. Weaving Jones’ shimmering synths with Gruft’s dynamic bass and soaring guitar, and Mike Avenaim’s crashing drums, the single is rhythmic, yet every item brings a sheen of its own; a case of Aristotle’s whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Add Connolly’s Lavigne-esque vocals, and you have a song set for stadiums where people pump their fists in the air, as well as playing air-guitar and dancing about the house.
Melodically, ‘body bag’ is full-bodied, but it is the lyricism and message that adds weightiness. Connolly explains:
“’body bag’ is a song about being underestimated, betrayed, and talked about like you’re already gone – and then getting back up louder and stronger than before. I wrote it from a moment where someone thinks they’ve ended you, but all they really did was give you proof that you’re harder to break than they thought… I want people to listen to my music and feel empowered, like they can go out and do anything, and don’t have to be scared to be themselves. Hopefully, they take away something positive and realise they’re not the only ones feeling this way.”
