ReeToxA – You Deserve Better Than Me (2026)
If our lives were separated into different linear elements, that complex line labelled “relationships” would be an intricate weave of joy, confusion, disappointment, hope, bliss and tragedy – sometimes all in the same thread. Now, some people find the love of their lives during childhood, date, marry, and have a marvellous time growing old with each other; others, well, just don’t have that luck. Singer-songwriter Jason McKee, performing as ReeToxA, jumps into the thread of relationships, eagerly baring his soul, clasping at the colours, and celebrating the universal themes of love lost, love found, and “um, yeah, I’m not too sure about this one”. The latest addition to his discography is the single, ‘You Deserve Better Than Me’.
Following his well-received pop-rock track, ‘Bottle’, ‘You Deserve Better Than Me’ shifts to a softer, smoother slip of soft rock; the type that you imagine a person sitting on their balcony staring into the distance would play. Produced by Simon Moro, Peter Marin’s toe-tapping drums pulsate in the background, while Kit Riley’s plodding bass keeps pace. James Ryan’s soaring guitar dances across the smooth melody, as each element beautifully blends into a tranquil, languid, gentle single.
One quality I love about ReeToxA’s music is the way it grabs you – relatable and intimate, like an old friend having a conversation over a cold beverage and nibbles. With ‘You Deserve Better Than Me’, McKee sings about a missed romantic opportunity with earnestness. We’re not talking about the lost chance of a one-time meeting in ‘The Lisa Song’, but the “right person, wrong time” situation that, well, just sucks. Inspired by a failed Tinder date where McKee met this great girl but he just wasn’t into it, so things dissolved and faded away – a sing-along tune “that makes us all think about the one who got away… You feel sorry for the young girl and Jason not finding true happiness, but at least everyone was let down gently.”
One of the softer ballads on McKee’s intense double-album SOLILOQUY, ‘You Deserve Better Than Me’ is a sincere song that will make you sigh, giggle a little at the lyrics, and sit back to enjoy a few minutes of calming music. Highly recommended!!
