Speak Easy Circus – Lions Should Hunt (2021)

Advertising is generally targeted to what society deems correct, but this only ended up annoying Speak Easy Circus. After seeing another advert with an attractive woman seductively selling a mundane product, they had enough and created ‘Lions Should Hunt’. With the single, they express their anger at societal ideals, the excuses people use avoid consequences and the pandering of the world to certain people.

While the inspiration of the single is heavy and potentially depressing, the band uses their funky style to make it more accessible. With an upbeat dance rhythm and funky sounds, Jack Avison (guitar, vocals, keys), Jon Wallace (sax, keys), Frazer Laurie (drums) and Chatonda Ridley (bass) have created a banging anthem against societal norms. If you are looking for a track that captures feeling fed up while letting you have a blast, this is the one for you.

‘Lions Should Hunt’ draws you into the funky sound with the guitar line and the honking sax. There is a wonderful interplay between the melodic guitar line and the sax that pulses to vibrant life for the chorus. There is an irresistible hook to the music that gets your foot tapping to the beat. As the song progresses, the funky grooves of the music have your body jumping around to the rhythm. The energy of the music sinks into your veins and puts a smile on your face. You can’t help but fall into the bright energy of the melody for an upbeat vibe.

While the music has you covered in upbeat vibes, Avison’s vocals bring a heavier flow. His vocal performance is a smooth line that slices its way through the funky dance vibes while the lyrics are packed with deep messaging. The lively vibes of the music actually help the seriousness of the vocals shine because of the contrast. The lyricism used for the track is poetic while offering a heavy hit and making you really think about society.

Speak Easy Circus has you jumping to their upbeat rhythm while contemplating a much heavier topic in ‘Lions Should Hunt’. The single is packed with funky fun from the infectious saxophone notes to the groovy guitars. The vocals cut through the fun to bring you to ground and get you thinking about how the world really works.
