Super Saiyan Jay – Staying In (2023)

This might be my introduction to Super Saiyan Jay, but he has been bringing his vibes to audiences for several years. Since his single ‘Demons and Monsters’ in 2019 and 2022’s critically acclaimed ‘Keep It Direct’, the US-based hip hop artist is turning heads far beyond his North American borders. From the UK to France, Brazil to Australia, Super Saiyan Jay receives rave reviews, radio station airtime, and features on numerous playlists. Come with me as I tiptoe into Super Saiyan Jay’s critically acclaimed discography.

Recorded in a West Palm Beach Studio, ‘Staying In’ is Super Saiyan Jay’s first release in 2023. Similar to his previous track ‘Keep It Direct’, ‘Staying In’ retains the distinctive simplistic hip-hop sound; however, while simple it is kaleidoscopic. Bold beats back rich vocals with a barebones 90s hip-hop vibe. Effortlessly caressing you with his dulcet voice, you feel soothed throughout ‘Staying In’. The thing is, while there is a laidback feel, a pulsating forcefulness hides behind the stark melody.

One aspect I find particularly interesting about Super Saiyan Jay’s tone is how it elegantly aligns with the song’s theme. ‘Staying In’ is an intimate expression of the weariness people feel in reality and a desperate need to escape; hence the concept of “stay-cation”. He explains:

“The whole thought process for this song was to give a very laidback feel. Not wanting to go out and finding solace staying inside and finding comfort while being home. Your mind can wander with good thoughts and bad. Sometimes we just need to escape reality.”

Finding the theme song for introverts and isolation, ‘Staying In’ has a sophisticated solidarity in the moving tune. Yet, despite the soothing mellifluous sincerity of the single, Super Saiyan Jay kicks back with a rough, rugged rawness. As a Dragonball Z fan, I associate Super Saiyan with the insane burst of bright light before plunging into a ferocious battle. Super Saiyan Jay captures this insanity but exudes its power in a toe-tapping, breath-taking slide of calm.
