The Assist – Divorced For Christmas (2025)
Following the well-received single ‘Day Off’, The Assist bring the same cheer and soothing charm that flows from songs like ‘White Christmas’ and ‘All I Want For Christmas (Is You)’ in their new single, ‘Divorced For Christmas’. Yet, while the joy of Christmas resides in the track, The Assist don’t look at the glossy surface but delves deeper into the raw, gritty humanity and honesty of the day. Produced by Ryan Pinson, ‘Divorced For Christmas’ has a soft lilt to make you smile, but captures the more trying side of the day, like those heated arguments, screaming kids, and the random uncle sitting in the corner drinking more and more booze before running around barefoot in the snow.
Thematically and lyrically, ‘Divorced For Christmas’ is a tale that has you shaking your head and sideways grins; however, it is the melody that has you feeling the fun of the season while winding about that raw honesty. Joining Ryan Stanton and Louis Davies guitars, Jorge Poole’s bass and Luke Ford’s drums, the single is a harmonic rollercoaster of music. Add Mikey Stanton’s rich vocals with Rhianna Keane’s silvery voice, and you have a duet that showcases the camaraderie between all players.
“I absolutely love Christmas, and I was very lucky to have had lots of family around me at Christmas time as a child. Despite all the love in our house, it was a family tradition of ours to have a good old-fashioned row on Christmas Day. Not all families are perfect, and I’ve always taken pride in staying loyal to the truth in the stories that I tell in my music. This track is not a means of dispelling the elation and magic that Christmas brings, but it is a reminder to everyone that Christmas is not always how it is portrayed to be in the movies.” – Mikey Stanton on ‘Divorced For Christmas’
