The Brace Boys – Hot Sauce (2021)
Food is often used in metaphors that help us understand the world around us. This is something that The Brace Boys are using in their single ‘Hot Sauce’. Using the sauce as a metaphor for the secret ingredient needed to live life to the fullest, they encourage us to think positively and apply ourselves to the opportunities that present themselves. Like hot sauce, life can be flavoursome, spicy and unique if you have the courage to accept it.
This boost to live life to the fullest comes from Kurt (vocals), John (bass) and Ben (saxophone). The trio met while working as cruise ship musicians in 2015 and formed an instant bond. After leaving crew life at the start of 2020, they were ready to pursue their new dream as a band when the pandemic hit. Through the lockdowns, they were able to record their upcoming album remotely and get this funky single out to the world.
‘Hot Sauce’ uses a progressive opening to lightly pull you into the single before the drums can get to you. Once the saxophone hits, you are thrown into a soothing funky flow that is all summer sun and blossoming flowers. There is a wonderful vibe to the melody that fills you with happiness and good vibes. The saxophone is wonderful to listen to as it makes you want to dance around while the beats sink their hooks into your limbs to get you grooving to it. There is a slightly old-school feeling to the melody that makes you think of the days of soul-funk, bellbottoms and sunny meadows.
Kurt’s vocals are as easy as the opening melody when he enters. There is a companionable feeling to his delivery in the opening of the track as he hits you with some really relatable lyrics. This turns into a playful shove to get you moving onto the path of enjoying life to the fullest. As you listen to the single, you are filled with the sense that you can do anything you want to if you push through. This positive boost is all wrapped up in the catchiest single imaginable.
