The Funny Terns – Bring Back The Beaver (2023)

Sometimes we need a little laughter and light-heartedness in our lives. The world is painful, hurtful and exhausting, but music can make things slightly brighter. I’m not talking about brooding catharsis or chipper solace melodies; I’m talking about something fun, happy and grin-inducing. Grab my arm and we’ll take a journey to joy with The Funny Terns.

A husband-and-wife comedy duo, Natalie Fée and Angus Barr blend the cheekiness of Tim Michen with the boldness of Bill Bailey in their quirky music. Recorded with Lesser Spotted Records, The Funny Terns blast into the holly jolly Christmas playlist with the single ‘Bring Back The Beaver’.

A toe-tapping two-minute-long song (well, thereabouts), ‘Bring Back The Beaver’ is infectious, heartfelt, joyful and just a lot of fun. With Barr’s bright ukelele, the single is a simplistic one; however, the rich vocals from Barr and Fée give it a kaleidoscopic feel. Bouncing from one strum of the uke to another, the springy tune rolls across your brain in its infectious nature ensuring you won’t forget it anytime soon. Yet, while the song is comedic in presentation and execution, it is far more profound at its core.

Drawing and then blurring the fine line between jovial silliness and thought-provoking seriousness, ‘Bring Back The Beaver’ uses festive charm to draw attention to serious environmental issues, such as the loss of biodiversity in the UK. Activist, environmentalist, author and founder of the charity City To Sea, Natalie Fée explains:

“We felt that nature deserved to have the number one spot this year and wanted to celebrate the return of the beaver to England’s rivers with a very British comic song. We’re excited to release it this Christmas and share some good tidings, while at the same time raising awareness and support for our cause. We wrote ‘Bring Back The Beaver’ as a playful homage to all the hard work done by the environmental movement over the past few years to restore nature…”
