The New Citizen Kane – San Diego (2025)
A multi-faceted artist, Kane Michael Luke – performing as The New Citizen Kane – can brush his experience palette with modelling, acting, and making music. Technically, the UK-based singer-songwriter started his creative career at age 17 on the theatre circuit; however, it is not his good looks or great acting that catches our attention, it is his music. In 2008, his club hit, ‘Don’t Feel No Shame’, topped global club charts, but when he returned to London in 2009, he took another path on the indie scene as The New Citizen Kane.
With his critically acclaimed album The Tales of Morpheus, Luke found the line between emotional sincerity and brutal mortality, grasping the core of the human spirit in his melodies. With the EP, Could Have Been, he continued his intricate exploration of reality, but now, with his single ‘San Diego’, he ushers in a new era of The New Citizen Kane.
An immersive single, ‘San Diego’ pushes you into a hazy sonic river of pop-inspired sounds. Opening with twinkling electronic beats cruising by like bright fairy lights, you find yourself set off on a dream-pop lane; however, the soothing slip into synth-driven waves of music with an interspersed piano layered beneath to carry the laidback tune with sophisticated elegance.
For me, the melody is perfect Friday relief after a long week. Yet, it is the lyricism so beautifully delivered with rich vocals that adds profoundness to the tune. The New Citizen Kane explains:
“’San Diego’ is a summer road trip sing-along anthem. Both intimate and cinematic at the same time, the atmosphere perfectly aligns with the song’s poignant themes of love, loss, and longing. It’s about the magnetic pull of a city that holds both the joy of love and the sting of loss, leaving the listener with a lingering sense of nostalgia and the understanding that some places, and some loves, can never truly be left behind.”
