The Sunmills – They Tell Lies (2026)

With a reputation for blending hard-hitting rock with funk-laced rhythm and a sharp sense of humour, The Sunmills captivate audiences with their raw, powerful, engaging music. Joining the talents of seasoned musicians Jim Brown (vocals and guitar), Porter Chapman (drums) and Kyle McCann (bass guitar), The Sunmills bind the swagger of Hendrix with the strut of Red Hot Chili Peppers, all in a rush of rock hitting you between the eyes but leaving you smiling. Join us as we dive into their most recent release, ‘They Tell Lies’.

Unpicking the core of human experiences, whether it be joyful optimism or desperate grit, The Sunmills are never far from that point where you sit back and think: “yeah, someone gets it.” In ‘They Tell Lies’, the Utah-based trio take an even deeper look at today’s reality, winking at the distortion, confusion, and vulnerability of 21st-century society. Singer-songwriter Jim Brown explains:

“In 2022, on the way to visit a concentration camp in Germany, I got into an argument with my brother. I said, “I worry if Donald Trump gets elected again, we’re headed in this direction.” He said, “That’s funny, because under Joe Biden, I feel like we’re already there.” I thought about that moment for a long time. How could two smart, reasonable people look at the same world and come away with completely different conclusions? Eventually, I realised, we aren’t just disagreeing, we’re being shown entirely different versions or reality… That realisation stuck with me. This song came out of the feeling that we’re living in a post-truth world.”

Produced by Jed Jones, with mixing by Scot Wiley, ‘They Tell Lies’ shifts from the Hendrix/Red Hot Chili Peppers swag, leaning further toward 90s pop-rock meets alt-rock sounds. A soaring guitar matches a bold bass, with some twinkling percussion shimmering from behind, all riding a sonic sweep of music. For me, however, it is the drums that set the pace with an oscillation from steady plodding to crashing beats.

Now, this might be me alone, but I felt that ‘They Tell Lies’ isn’t just some music with lyrics, it’s an anthem where The Sunmills hold your hand in a peaceful protest. I suggest you join the march.
