Track of the Day: AOA – It’s Just A Formality (2026)

Pop-punk almost epitomised, Northern Irish foursome AOA are here to say that, firstly, punk is not dead and that music can make you bare your soul, find some peace, and make a stand. Embracing the golden years of pop-punk, the Belfast-based group drag the power of acts like Green Day, Sum 41 and Blink 182 to modern-day audiences, immersing them in the rebellious sound while tackling timeless themes like mental health, self-conflict, and the grit of life in totality. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single, ‘It’s Just A Formality’.

Produced at Start Together Studios by Michael Bell, Caolón Fitzsimons (vocals and guitar), Owen Crummey (lead guitar), Jake Fox (bass), and Adam Din (drums) make people sit up and take notice with their rambunctious new single. From the outset, ‘It’s Just A Formality’ breathes life into the sounds of Green Day and Blink 182 with thrashing drums, a heavy bass and scorching guitars. Yet, as much as each member brings individuality to the track, every element weaves together with harmonic unity – a crazy tune held in a rhythmic sonic wrapper.

Melodically, ‘It’s Just A Formality’ is pure pop-punk from start to end, and Fitzsimons rich vocals swim across the tune, holding your hand to guide you across the pool; an old friend dragging you on an exciting journey. The song may be upbeat and energetic, but the lyricism, in contrast, unpacks the darker sides of reality. Instead of bouncy, adrenaline-filled enthusiasm, the core of ‘It’s Just A Formality’ sits in the centre of mental health challenges. It looks at loneliness, isolation, and disconnection – the case of being lost and alone in a sea of people.

So, overall, what’s my opinion of ‘It’s Just A Formality’? I might be a little biased as a fan of pop-punk, but AOA hits the mark with every second of the song. The title might be ‘It’s Just A Formality’, but this track is anything but. It tears down the crusty tragedy of formalities and lays bare something special for everyone to enjoy. Highly recommended!!
