Track of the Day: Luna Keller (ft. Dom Malin) – Shoulder (2024)

It is easy to write songs about happy things like new romances, old friendships, and exciting adventures, it takes more to reach into the dank darkness of your soul and bring that to life. With insatiable infectiousness and soul-stirring skill, singer-songwriter Luna Keller pulls you along through despair, trauma, struggles and turmoil leading to light, hope and empowerment. About to release her concept album Ocean Inside of Me, Keller embraces listeners with her new single ‘Shoulder’.

The seventh chapter of Ocean Inside of Me, ‘Shoulder’ follows the well-received singles ‘If I Was No More’ and ‘Not Ready’ as a pivotal point in her struggle with depression. As with ‘If I Was No More’ and ‘Not Ready’, the new single touches on the movement toward self-recovery and self-discovery but with a warmth lacking in the previous tracks. Shifting from the skin-chilling haunting melodies, which juxtapose the renewed need to seek help, ‘Shoulder’ brings every happy feeling, pleasant thought and hopeful breath to our ears.

Produced by Dominic Romano, ‘Shoulder’ is a wholesome folk song filled with oozing warm embraces after difficult times. Joined by Rich Andruska on banjo and Dom Malin on guitar, the harmonic melody captures the comfort of sitting around a fire and feeling loved. You can practically feel the security and happiness of being around supportive friends as you listen to ‘Shoulder’. While I adore the melody, I find the interplay between Keller and Malin’s vocals heightens the essence of powerful bonds between best friends. Malin explains:

“The creative synergy between Luna and me flowed effortlessly as she penned the heartfelt lyrics while I crafted the accompanying guitar chords. Before we knew it, ‘Shoulder’ was born – a song that encapsulated the essence of our bond… The tagline “I’ll rest my head on your shoulders” symbolises the unwavering support and comfort found in true friendships, embodying a sense of hope and contentment amidst life’s journey.”

In addition to the single, Luna Keller released an official music video for ‘Shoulder’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
