Tyler Elden – Our Good Name (2022)

After astounding us with his insatiable single ‘Trial By Fire’, singer-songwriter Tyler Elden is back with another outstanding offering. Last time we dubbed him the potential lovechild of Death Cab For Cutie and Biffy Clyro, but now Elden steps outside the box with ‘Our Good Name’.

Who is Tyler Elden, I hear you ask. Well, if you didn’t know his name by now you have been deprived some fantastic music. Let me tell you a bit about him. A US-based musician, Elden has several years of experience in some of the more notable Philadelphia music venues, such as The Grape Room, The Fire and Underground Arts. He has collaborated with artists from the collective The Lunar Year and is set for a busy year of touring in 2023. Featured in various publications, he has been referred to as a diverse musician incorporating various influences from progressive rock to folk (TJPL News). He is also turning heads internationally with coverage from We Write About Music, York Calling, and The Mic.

Now back to the music and Elden’s latest single ‘Our Good Name’. As part of his monthly releases campaign, ‘Our Good Name’ is the fourth instalment following ‘Trial By Fire’. Moving from an exploration of “war, a dystopian future, and questioning the struggle to keep fighting…”, Elden looks at the more desperate side of existence in his new song. This latest single “tells the downtrodden story of a family being cast out of their community and the future of an unborn child.” Interestingly enough, while the themes of his music have a melancholic style, Elden’s melodies are not exactly heartbreaking.

‘Our Good Name’ revolves around a desperate concept lyrically, and the melody brings a sense of vulnerability; however, a sophisticated flow is heard in the rock ballad. The combination of guitar, drums and Elden’s gruff vocals make your heart ache but also share a tinge of hopefulness in a dark way. With strong rock influences, Elden retains his nod to alternative rock sounds of the 90s/early 2000s. Yet, while there is a nostalgic breath of The Verve and Queens of the Stone Age, Tyler Elden is creating a completely unique sound that is entirely Elden.
