Chip & The Charge Ups – Paying Back The Devil (2022)

Described as “Pittsburgh icons” (Pittsburgh City Paper), “tasty for metal and punk fans” (Metal Temple), and “…the perfect fit for those listeners looking for rock ‘n’ roll-infused contemporary alternative music” (Thoughts Words Actions), Chip & The Charge Ups are turning heads with their unique sound. Along with praise from notable publications, the US-based trio has performed at prominent festivals opening for acts like Dee Snider, Liliac, Dirty Honey and Nita Strauss. Come with us as we dip our toes into the latest addition to their acclaimed discography, ‘Paying Back The Devil’.

Following their alternative rock single, ‘The Nightmare’s Over’ (released in 2021), ‘Paying Back The Devil’ is the band’s first single of 2022. Retaining the high-spirited rock tones, ‘Paying Back The Devil’ continues the group’s hard-hitting sound; however, the new track is far heavier with bolder metal influences in the melody. Pounding drums fuse with powerful guitars creating a riotous tune in which you can become lost. Interestingly, while the instrumentation folds into a harmonious melody, a distinct prominence of drums, guitars and vocals is heard giving people a taste of everything in ‘Paying Back The Devil’.

Malena Dominick and Chip Dominik intoxicate listeners with a bold bass and screeching guitar, while Nolan Allen beats us over the head with drumsticks; but it is Chip Dominick’s gruff vocals that add an edge to the single. Slathering the melody with his rough and rugged tones, he creates an almost palpable grittiness with ‘Paying Back The Devil’.

Rushing through your veins, climbing up your spine and rattling about your brain, ‘Paying Back The Devil’ hits harder territory for Chip & The Charge Ups.
