Ventrelles – Emily’s Song (2025)

Should you take a fancy to the sounds of Echo & The Bunnymen, The War On Drugs, The Stone Roses, or The Verve, you would probably take a liking to Ventrelles. Hailing from the UK, this Manchester-based foursome has described themselves as “a tuneful, melodic wall of sound dressed in functional outdoor wear” – apt considering their powerful performances, hard-hitting music, and a no-nonsense attitude. Hitting the scene in 2018, Ventrelles have established themselves as seasoned artists with a nostalgic but contemporary flair of Britpop, surf rock, and super-edgy, psychedelic, indie-inspired tones. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Emily’s Song’.

Following their 2024 singles ‘We All Fall Down’ and ‘A Symphony Of Sorts (2024 mix)’, Phil Knox (vocals and guitar), Connor Long (guitar), Paul Mawhinney (bass), and G-Lo Knott (drums) saunter into 2025 with ‘Emily’s Song’. Produced with Gavin Monaghan and Liam Radburn, the new single drags listeners back to 90s Britpop with a seeming blur of Oasis, Suede and Dodgy.

Entwined in a kaleidoscopic tapestry, ‘Emily’s Song’ bursts with shimmering lights and soulful glimmers. The bass kicks with a bold blue thread, while crashing drums weave across with a bright red line, the soaring guitars leave a glittering yellow, while Knox’s vocals dance along with purple passion. Each brings a unique element so they stand out individually, but overall, a rhythmic blaze of sound uniting in symphonic harmony. The toe-tapping sophistication of exuberant playfulness not only showcases the production skills of Monaghan and Radburn but also illustrates the beautiful camaraderie within Ventrelles.

One aspect I enjoy about ‘Emily’s Song’ is the duality of music. Energetic and enthusiastic, but also gentle and soothing. Confident and bold, but also wistful and subdued. My favourite Britpop band is Dodgy, and I believe this “very sweet slice of gently energetic psychedelic pop…” could be placed alongside that iconic group, at last on my playlist. This is my introduction to Ventrelles, and I cannot wait for more from the talented quartet.
