Wattmore – Canadian Whiskey (2025)
Kangaroos, Vegemite, Steve Irwin, the Outback, Neighbours, and now Wattmore – in this precise moment, that’s what I come up with when thinking of the land down under… oh yes, and that Men At Work song. Alongside the Hemsworth brothers, Australia has Aiden and Kai Boak taking the world by storm, with a bit of a cheeky grin and sarky attitude. In ‘Romantic Side’, the lads took the warm fuzzies of romance and flipped the switch, drenching those rose-tinted dreams with backdoor booze. Today, we take a look and listen to their most recent single, ‘Canadian Whiskey’, wondering what dry-humoured, eye-rolling, somewhat stumbling soak of music is coming out of the bottle. Join us, won’t you?
On the back of their singles ‘Romantic Side’ and ‘I Don’t Miss That Woman’, Wattmore takes you down to the dive bar with a backdoor mugging of old-school bluegrass and a country chaser. Recorded and produced with Lindsay Waddington, ‘Canadian Whiskey’ binds sleek drums with toe-tapping banjo, a fiddle at one point adding the extra barstool to the table, and rhythmic guitars peeking from the background. Cheeky, toe-tapping, and infectious to the point where you find yourself singing along even if you don’t really know the words. I mean, who can resist rich, honey-soaked vocals kicking up the melody and getting you all smiley with knees-up yee-haws?
Alright, really bad boozy descriptions aside, ‘Canadian Whiskey’ is a fun-filled tune with a sophisticated and polished melody, as well as a smile-inducing grittiness bubbling in the joyful track. Yet, while the song is fun and dandy, cheeky side glances brew in the evocative ideas lingering within its simplistic lyricism. Wattmore explain:
“They told us not to release this song. They said it would get us cancelled. That was all the encouragement we needed… ‘Canadian Whiskey’ is, on paper, a “conventional country drinking song”, which is true if you ignore the sarcasm, the side-eye, and the fact it was co-written with Allan Caswell – a self-confessed leftie, boomer, hippie, and professional troublemaker… Before anyone gets dramatic – it’s not anti-American. It’s just aggressively pro everyone else. Canada, Mexico, Ukraine, France, Australia, hell, if Greenland makes tequila, they’re in too… This is either our masterpiece or Exhibit A.”
