Zachary Mason – Sweetheart (2026)
With a growing following of his hard-hitting and evocative melodies, singer-songwriter Zachary Mason refuses to be pigeon-holed. Since 2021, he has penned and recorded over 300 demos, and after releasing some of that music, Mason has been featured in notable publications – including an interview with SPIN magazine – received airplay on international radio stations, charted on indie radio charts, featured by prominent promoters on Instagram, and continues to reach audiences on different streaming sites each day. Last year, we were delighted to review his singles, ‘The Funky Martians’ and ‘Madness Gladness’, and today we’re pleased to bring his single, ‘Sweetheart’, to everyone’s ears.
Following his genre-diverse 2025 EP, 5…4…3…2…1…, ‘Sweetheart’ jumps from the funk-filled ‘The Funky Martians’ and synthy ‘Earthsick’ to a sweep of rock music. Brimming with the glam-rock tones of the 80s, Mason drags us back to the world of David Bowie with those heavier intonations of Prince slipping along the melody. Joined by drummer Nate Barnes and bassist John Thomasson, ‘Sweetheart’ is self-described as a “…harder, crunchier sound with plenty of punch.”
Produced by the Hong Kong-based mixing and mastering engineer, Derrick Lin, ‘Sweetheart’ binds crashing drums, a singing bass, soaring guitars and a spattering of keyboards in a heavy, harmonic rock melody. In its vivid, vibrant, powerful rock flavour, it swims and twirls about you with scintillating charm, engulfing you in the weighty, full-bodied tune; however, it is Mason’s lighter vocals that add an edge to the dynamic melody. Somewhat haunting and veiled in the rock arrangement, the rich vocals are both hushed and prominent, holding your hand in its whispered presence.
A song about a sweetheart and all the tumultuous yet blissful turns of romance, Mason shares that ‘Sweetheart’ is: “…a powerful, compelling rock track with a touch of the 80s… The song deals with the wonder of love and the power of relationships… the idea of a sweetheart, and the wonderful feelings and stories love can bring about.
