Bear Jr – Breaking The Chain (2025)

At its core, Bear Jr’s work has been described as “about life lived honestly… every song is built from the truth of a lived experience…”; this raw emotional honesty and personal narrative allow listeners to explore life, from the tiny triumphs to the tragic downfalls. It’s life in a bubble and music as our guide. Releasing his debut single in 2025, the US-based musician is relatively new – at least to the streaming side of things; however, there is a maturity in his work that surrounds the heartfelt innocence of his finger-picking guitar skills. Join us as we delve into his song, ‘Breaking The Chain’.

Taken from his debut album, Every Little Thing, ‘Breaking The Chain’ joins 12 other tracks defining the core of Bear Jr’s sound – acoustic patterns created with clarity and sparking an emotional life from each note. Using a bold rock sound, we’re immediately drawn back to the alternative rock sound of the late 90s/early 2000s with the bombastic instrumentation of classic rock. Yet, just as there is a strong leaning toward yesteryear, Bear Jr keeps the melody modern in a contemporary alt-rock flavour.

Self-recorded and produced, ‘Breaking The Chain’ combines the forcefulness of a soaring guitar with pounding drums crashing from the background, all bound in a rhythmic wave of music. Interestingly, while the flush of a powerful electric guitar weaves across with restlessness, Bear Jr’s fingerpicking style seems to stand out in the same sense despite its less showy attitude.

A song of empowerment and strength, Bear Jr breaks that chain with this track, allowing audiences to scream along, dance about, and take that refreshing breath of liberation. For me, the gritty vocals are the cherry on the top, fusing Americana-esque depth with a rock-tinged flair. If ‘Breaking The Chain’ is anything to go by, I am eager to hear more from Bear Jr and will begin with his album, Every Little Thing.
