Ardentjohn – Into The Night (2026)
While Ardentjohn technically formed in Edinburgh some time back, this is our introduction to Ardentjohn, and given the six-year break in releasing material from 2020’s ‘Orange Nights’, I might be forgiven. Then again, the well-received single, ‘Hey Boy’, earlier this year – and the fact that the lads have over 15 years together – probably means we’re late to the party. Opening the year with ‘Hey Boy’, the band explain that this return single is “a song full of hope as we tumble out of winter, spurred on by sunny days ahead…” Today, we’re in the midst of those sunny days, and Ardentjohn’s message of hope and optimism rolls on with ‘Into The Night’.
Soft and gentle, ‘Into The Night’ lilts toward an indie-folk vibe, bringing the intimacy of traditional folk storytelling to an old-school indie tone. Seth Marron’s drums roll in the background like a pulsating heartbeat, as the cymbals come along with symphonic grace. Greg Isted’s bass keeps the pace alongside the drums, while Mark Abbot’s lead guitar soars, swerves and embraces the melody with tranquillity. For me, Andy Phillip’s flourishes of piano add a welcoming organic flair to the track. Harmonically and rhythmically, ‘Into The Night’ is a weave of music – each element unique and joined, but you also notice every instrument.
Melodically, ‘Into The Night’ is a song perfect for late-night drives, but also fits as the background song that plays in your head and you sing along to even though you don’t know the lyrics. Kieran Mason’s calm, soothing vocals are rich and full-bodied – almost dipped in honey, but not that much of a sweetness. Tender and wholehearted, his voice, combined with the chilled-out melody, perfectly conveys feelings of hope, optimism, empowerment and joy – attitudes desperately needed in today’s uncertain society.
So, what is my overall opinion of Ardentjohn? In one word: sensational. I cannot wait for more.
