Ryan Yingst – Ordinary Means (2026)
With a fresh-faced innocence and sweet smile, singer-songwriter Ryan Yingst is the embodiment of the nice guy next door. Yet, there is far more beneath the sunshine and happiness. Under the light-hearted exterior, Yingst looks at the intricacies of existential issues such as addiction, fear, loss and love. Using his heart-warming indie-folk style, he not only leaves you with a smile on your face but connects on a deeper, poignant, intimate level. Join us as we hit the play button on his most recent single, ‘Ordinary Means’.
Following his 2025 single ‘U-Haul’, ‘Ordinary Means’ retains the country vibes of ‘U-Haul’ but shifts to something more soothing, calmer and lilting Americana grooves. Yingst’s guitar holds your hand as it both soars across and keeps the pace of the track. Not a rollercoaster, but a tender hush that ebbs and flows with delicate ripples and peaceful waves. While Yingst’s guitar continues to showcase his soothing, languid musicality, it is the harmonica that makes ‘Ordinary Means’ weighty.
Prominent from the outset, Eion Kelly inserts a strange melancholy with his bold harmonica. It is as if he dances across ‘Ordinary Means’, catching your heart and playing with it. Vulnerable, fragile, and poignant, but simultaneously confident and tender, the harmonica adds an extra punch. A bold harmonica with a subtle guitar makes an interesting combination, but it is Yingst’s soulful vocals, lost in the music, that add an extra clip of sincerity.
“There is so much beautiful art that goes completely ignored because it sits in the setting of the ordinary. This song was built on quotes taken from my friends and peers who spend their lives devoted to their craft, give up hobbies and social lives to spend their time paying the rent with the art that means so much to them; often to be overlooked… a collection of frustrations every small artist experiences…” – Ryan Yingst on ‘Ordinary Means’
