Bárbara Pérez – Azul (2026)
With almost 20 years of experience in the music industry, Bárbara Pérez is more than merely an enchanting face. A professional singer, her presence and voice draw people in – soulful, smooth and enigmatic. Beginning as a backing vocalist in reggae, but then connecting with her Cuban heritage, Pérez embraces Cuban music with a classical structure and free-flowing liberation. This is our introduction to Bárbara Pérez, so join us as we delve into her new single, ‘Azul’.
Following her 2022 single, ‘Vente Negra’, ‘Azul’ binds elements of soul and jazz with tips of rock in a sweep of reggae. Produced by Joseph Derteano and James Calderon, the track’s melody shows an elegant sophistication in its production; however, within that maturity, there is a hip-swaying innocence and “release your hair and lose yourself in the music” sigh of relief. Victor Solana keeps time with his steady drum, as Layla Castell walks along with an electric bass guitar. Gustavo Pol’s synths shimmer beneath, and James Calderon’s guitar soars across while weaving into the chilled-out melody.
For me, it is not the guitars, synths, and drums that keep you entertained, although they really do. Stepping back to the 1960s and 2970s jazz-rock scene, Josep Tutusaus’ trombone and Joseph Derteano’s trumpet up the ante, seep into your skin, and send music through your veins. All while Pérez embraces you with her smooth, confident, rich voice.
Melodically, ‘Azul’ is an intoxicating song, but it is the theme that increases its full-bodied flair. Pérez explains:
“’Azul’ is a song dedicated to my mother who passed away in 2025. She loved the color blue. She used to wear her hair blue, it was her favorite color. She loved the sea and dreamed of flying. This song is a thank you, a memory, and a promise to keep moving forward with the love she left in me.”
