Big Sleep – Fingerlickin’ Goodness (2023)

Indie sleaze is alive and well with Big Sleep and their latest single ‘Fingerlickin’ Goodness’ is a prime example that this genre is back and ready for a resurgence.
Aidan and Naiara of the band’s jazz background are there for all to see with the track. Smooth isn’t it? The vocals just roll along superbly with funky tunes in every verse paired with the upbeat, yet cool calm chorus which really cements them as a band to watch in the coming months and years.

Big Sleep is one of those bands which from the first listen, it is clear they are destined for big things. They can hold their own in a musical community with contemporaries like The Big Thief and Alvvays. Taken from the recent EP Isn’t That Sweet, ‘Fingerlickin’ Goodness’ is a triumph in songwriting playing alongside stand-out tracks such as the earworm-inducing ‘Shivering’ and powerfully pumping ‘Maccy D’s’ showing the range of this act. All songs have a similar feel but all have their own unique style which is so important to keep things exciting.

This was one of those EPs I didn’t know I needed and have been listening to it constantly and honestly, it hasn’t got old. In fact, it has pushed me down a rabbit hole to discover their earlier work, everything from 2020’s Paint on Cars, 2021’s ‘Tattoos’ and 2023’s ‘Tutti Frutti’. Anyone who is a fan of what they’ve heard so far, I implore you to dive down this rabbit hole too.

It’s been an exciting and busy few months for Big Sleep, from the release of ‘Isn’t That Sweet’ to their sold-out show at Dublin’s Grand Social, the momentum looks to be with them for all the right reasons. I truly hope we see and hear a lot more from them in 2024.
