Bring Prudence – Summon The Ghost (2023)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Oleh Zaychenko, Bring Prudence is a mishmash of diverse sounds in a haunting melodic package. So, why the name Bring Prudence? It seems Zaychenko wanted to be between Bing Crosby and Bright Eyes on a playlist – it was only much later that he realised Mr Crosby was “Bing” not “Bring”. Whatever the moniker’s tale, we’re thrilled that Bring Prudence found his way to our playlists.

Inspired by the essence of humanity, Bring Prudence touches on themes of isolation, disintegrating relationships, sacrifice (metaphorical not actual, physical sacrifices), and magical thinking. Incorporating elements of his native Ukraine’s folklore, with “a sprinkling of business jargon”, the US-based musician transcends boundaries with a unique, intriguing sound. In 2010, Zaychenko released his debut EP, Engineers, leading the “electronnui” style – electronic music but much sadder than the norm. Now, over a decade later, his sound has been honed, polished and greatly evolved.

Described by Impose Magazine as “…a truly talented vocalist discussing his raw emotions in simplicity”, Zaychenko shows the beauty of minimalism in his single ‘Summon The Ghost’. Hot on the heels of his track ‘Midnight’, ‘Summon The Ghost’ brings a traditional folk tune to our ears. Imagine sitting around a campfire hearing tales of mystical characters by someone playing an acoustic guitar and losing himself in the song – ‘Summon The Ghost’ is the soundtrack for this scenario. Backing Zaychenko’s bold but serene vocals is singer Julia Brown enhancing the twinkling sublimeness of Bring Prudence in ‘Summon The Ghost’. Alongside multi-instrumentalist Damon Waitkus, Paul Collins (bass), Jordan Barhydt (piano), Will Matsuda (drums) and Juliet Jacobs (violin), Dreamboat (the album featuring ‘Summon The Ghost’) is a swooning swirl of music and emotions.

Oleh Zaychenko says that “music is a form of time travel…” and ‘Summon The Ghost’ looks tenderly at the power of memories. Piano-driven with a raw acoustic feel, the single captures the honesty and beauty of memories. I know memories are not always beautiful but the ethereal joy and mellifluous flow of ‘Summon The Ghost’ make it seem rather stunning in its sincerity.
