candyfromstrangers – Gameshow (2022)

If you are a fan of Mr Hudson, N.E.R.D., Daft Punk and Sight Telma Club, the chances are you’ll love candyfromstrangers. Hailing from the East Coast, the US-based pair use their eclectic musical backgrounds to create something, well, eclectic. As candyfromstrangers, actors and models Trew and Danni Holland aim to build memories from music and connect with their audiences – “…music can become the soundtrack to some of our most special moments, and it can accompany our memories for many years to come. This is the reason why candyfromstrangers wants to make every note special…” The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Gameshow’.

Recording and performing with a rotating cast of fellow musicians, candyfromstrangers brings diversity to each of their tracks. For instance, ‘Gameshow’ melds elements of hip-hop, RnB, funk and soul; whereas the previous track ‘ACCESS (Clocked Out Records Remix) was far more psychedelic with strong electronic pop overtones. ‘Gameshow’, by comparison, is soothing, smooth and gentler with chilled vibes.

Recorded with producers Ernesto and Bobby Salehnejad, ‘Gameshow’ is a well-layered and textured sonic masterpiece. The rich, soulful vocals of Danni Holland effortlessly meld with Trew’s bold rapping. Interestingly enough, it is this transition from warm dulcet tones to sharp hip-hop that illustrates the pair’s innovative creativity and enhances the emotive quality of their songs. A sort of, flowing with the soul and chilling with the laidback vibes before Trew bounces in with an abrupt response to Holland’s charming voice.

Melodically, ‘Gameshow’ is a calming song with an intoxicating quality, and I highly recommend everyone listen to it. I was always told not to take candy from strangers, but, personally, I’ll take as much candy from this candyfromstrangers any time of day.
