Butchered Blues – My Angel Is An Only Fan Girl (2026)
Based in the UK – Ashford, Kent to be exact – singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Dowling drew on life circumstances to create the alternative/indie-rock studio project, Butchered Blues. Initially born (can we say born?) of a primary lack of financial constraints and practical limitations, Dowling had “an abundance of material ready to record but no friends to play with or money to hire session musicians on retainer.” Pooling all his resources, Dowling began preparing the material for the studio, writing at home and playing all the instruments, except for the drums, which were provided by Dan Lucas.
Just as Butchered Blues was inspired by life experiences, Dowling uses melodies to delve deep into simply being human, faced with all the ifs, buts, and “what the hells” of the world. With his debut single, ‘My Angel Is An Only Fan Girl’, he unpacks the societal influences of modern culture. Dowling explains:
“’This song is designed to be exciting, hedonistic, hilarious, depressing, painful and culturally poignant all at the same time. Initially, it was an impulsive, emotionally-driven response to my seemingly endemic lack of romantic success and chronic loneliness. Over time, however, it evolved into a satirical cultural critique and parody of today’s extremely commodifying, shallow, cold, solipsistic and borderline sociopathic dating culture.”
Produced by Dan Lucas – the guy who plays the drums on the track – ‘My Angel Is An Only Fan Girl’ hits you directly between the eyes from the outset. A punch of drums opens the sweep of alternative rock music, and continues to crash throughout the song. Dowling’s bass guitar beats below, while a rhythm guitar keeps the melody running, and the lead guitar soars, swerves, and swirls in the arrangement. A shout needs to be given to the classic rock guitar solos – powerful, heavy, and insatiable.
Listening to ‘My Angel Is An Only Fan Girl’ has me singing along even though I don’t know the words – I particularly like the “I’m in love” at the end. Yet, it is the melody that sends you into a kaleidoscopic whirlpool. Each instrument spins you about, and by the end you’re a little exhausted but completely enchanted. Highly recommended!!!
