Coma Beach – Extreme Masochist (2024)

With the forcefulness of Sex Pistols, the brooding intensity of Joy Division, hard-hitting Bad Religion and the high-voltage Guns N’ Roses, Coma Beach is a rush of chaotic sonic rage. Formed almost four years ago, Coma Beach draws together the musical stylings of B. Kafka (vocals), Captain A. Fear (guitar), U. Terror (bass), M. Blunt (rhythm guitar) and M. Lecter (drums) merging various influences, genres and experiences. The Germany-based quintet started turning heads with their debut album The Scapegoat’s Agony in 2019, then re-emerged to critical acclaim in 2023 with ‘Jesus’ Tears’, ‘Nothing Right’ and ‘Another Song’. Join us as we jump into their latest single ‘Extreme Masochist’.

Following the well-received single ‘Another Song’, Coma Beach layers another pound of ferocious punk atop an already burning blast of music in ‘Extreme Masochist’. ‘Another Song’ held a reminiscence of The Ramones breathing life into a nostalgic whisper of yesteryear’s punk, but ‘Extreme Masochist’ takes things to another level…so you best prepare yourself.

Anarchistic anger and formidable rage blast through in the hard-hitting punk melody. Pounding drums crash through with scorching guitars and a brooding bass. Interestingly, while there is a symphonic union between the instruments, the arrangement captures the individuality of each member. Lecter’s drums stand to attention with Fear’s guitar and Blunt’s rhythm guitar flashing alongside it. Terror’s bass travels below with haunting intensity letting you flit from one instrument to the next. A mad twirl of the head this way and then, you almost have whiplash; however, pure punk blasts forth with a mellifluous harmony.

The melody is crazy and can have you rocking the mosh pit, but it is the crude vocals that have the floor vibrating. Gruff, coarse and grating, Kafka’s voice finds the delicate line between soothing song and scorching rage; all engaging the intricate feelings of anger, fear, aggression, despair and turmoil in a volatile shout. This frustrating fuel of intricate anarchy encapsulates the tale of ‘Extreme Masochist’. Coma Beach explains:

“Having spiralled through various delusions of grandeur and humiliation, the unnamed antihero experiences emotional catharsis by facing head-on the painful and torturous reality of the human condition.”
