Davey Long – Flesh and Blood (2021)

Renowned for his engaging performances and music, singer-songwriter Davey Long holds a strong place in the Irish music scene. Drawing on his Irish roots, Ireland-based Long is a part of The Kilkennys touring widely at various prestigious venues and festivals. Now, he embraces a solo project with an alternative rock sound. With positive feedback from various blogs, magazines and radio stations, Long is building a presence as an individual artist as well as being a member of The Killkennys. The latest single in his repertoire is ‘Flesh and Blood’.

Taken off his debut album Eitilt, and following the single ‘Last Train To Tupelo’ (read our review here), ‘Flesh and Blood’ is an alternative rock meets indie-rock single with a cinematic soundscape. Combining dynamic guitars with heartfelt piano solos, ‘Flesh and Blood’ is flowing song but with an underlying hard-hitting melodic intensity. While Long is a multi-instrumentalist, the new single features musicians like bassist Dave Gough, keyboardist Rob Larkin, guitarists Shane O’Dwyer and Eoin Drennan with James Delahunty on synths. The incorporation of all these talents showcases Long’s innovativeness with each musician bringing diversity to the melting pot.

It is possible to liken Long’s single to the sounds of U2 and Oasis, however, his unique vocals make ‘Flesh and Blood’ more attention-grabbing and original. A poignant song, ‘Flesh and Blood’ uses a melancholic quality to explore the theme of human fragility. The delicate tone adds a sense of intimacy as Long not only reviews the human spirit but uses nostalgic reflection to “drop words of melodic wisdom.”

In addition to the single, Davey Long has released an official music video for ‘Flesh and Blood’. The video can be viewed on YouTube.
