Die Auster Bunny – The Band (2022)

For a lot of people, there never seems to be enough time to do everything or connect with the people we want to. What we often don’t realise is that not making time for others can inflict unnoticed scars that build up over time until they claim their price. This is something that Die Auster Bunny are aware of and delve into with their single ‘The Band’ which continues their dive into modern collective psychology.

As they dip into our collective consciousness, they bring light to shadows with a sparkle that shines with the delicate touch of melancholy. The artful and unique layering of harmonises and melodics come from the brains of Rilli Willow and Benedikt Bindewald whose initial meeting resulted in sparks flying. A few years later, this musical project was born bringing a contradiction of sound to life.

The rich string quartet that opens ‘The Band’ is so different to any other music you might be listening to. They bring a depth to the soundscape that is tender, yet carries the lightest strains of melancholy. You can hear the touch of classical string arrangements in the melody, but this starts to turn to a more pop flow as the single progresses. The combination of traditional strings and pop foundations is fantastic and really allows the single to stand out. At times, the melody has a soft flow that you want to sink into only to pick up the pace for a bouncing tone that is matched by the vocals. Through the melody, Bindewald is able to set the scene of the contrast of light and dark that is effortlessly picked up by Willow’s vocals.

As the classical tones of the strings grab your attention, Willow’s powerful, yet wonderfully tender, vocals caress the skin on the back of your neck. Turning to her performance, you can feel her reach out to someone who is not able to reciprocate for a variety of reasons. It is a powerful performance that is packed with emotion as it reaches into your chest and sets an ember of melancholy. Through the lyrics, the duo treats us to a look at the little wounds we leave on each other through our carelessness. When you take the vocals and melody together, you fall into a wonderfully light and sparkling sound that hides a bone-deep sadness beneath its tender surface. The combination of classical strings and pop is so different, yet they are able to handle it with masterful ease.

Die Auster Bunny bring a unique sound to our lives, while leaving a tender trail of melancholy in their wake through the beautiful tones of ‘The Band’. The string-driven melody is fantastic as it melds classical stylings with a modern pop flair. The vocals pick up this fusion while reaching into your chest to tug at your emotions.
