Dream Operator – As You Do (2022)

Led by songwriter and composer David, Dream Operator is a US-based collective that is difficult to categorise. Conceived from the ashes of disbanded bands, the group brings a punk DIY ethos to symphonic classical music theory in their intriguing music. A relatively new project, Dream Operator is a minnow in a sonic ocean of sharks; however, their diverse, obscure and unique music ensures they will not be minnows for long. Let’s take a look (or rather a listen) to their debut single ‘As You Do’.

The first single from their upcoming seven-track EP (to be released in early 2023), ‘As You Do’ is a melodic fusion of strings, drums, piano and guitars. Initially penned for an advertisement, the melody was “disassembled, squished, torn and reassembled” into a powerful track. Coming in at just over three minutes, the soothing, soft and gentle ‘As You Do’ takes you on a three-minute holiday from reality – yes, it is that calming.

What I really love about Dream Operator is not the obvious musical talent, but the way the collective attempts to find the line between electronic and organic instrumentation. Opening with piano, met with drums and led by a beautiful string section, there is a strong acoustic flavour; however, add some synth layers and you have this cross-section of synthetic and organic music.

The melody can, by all means, hold its own, but it is the vocal execution that adds the extra deep sigh to ‘As You Do’. Rich, bold and warm, but with a melancholic lilt, you can feel the emotion behind the dulcet tones. Overall, I think Dream Operator is really onto something with their obscure soundscape – a slant on the chamber pop/synth-pop sound if you will. In truth, if this is Dream Operator’s introduction I cannot wait for the rest of their releases!
