Ghost of Panama – Subterranean Homesick Blues (2026)
Retaining respect for traditional music but pushing the envelope with boundary-breaking originality, UK-based Ghost of Panama finds that balancing point where honouring musical heritage meets visionary innovation. Founded in early 2022, the band released two singles and performed a plethora of times in West and Central London; by 2024, however, the band had “slimmed down to a two-piece line-up”. Drawing together vocalist Christabel Liu and multi-instrumentalist Keith Welman, the pair continue to saunter through London’s music scene, releasing head-turning singles and confident, engaging live shows.
Following their critically acclaimed debut album, The Last Food On Earth, Ghost of Panama both stepped back for a break and continued their artistic momentum by releasing cover singles; the first of which is ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’. A reimagining of the iconic Bob Dylan tune, Ghost of Panama grabs the original melody by its scruff, shakes it about a bit, turns it around and adds a contemporary rock twist. Interestingly, while the track is distinctly different, the reckless abruptness of the folk-rock original lingers.
A concoction of crashing drums, a heavy bass and rock-tinged guitar, ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ breathes life into nostalgic classic rock, yet teeters across vintage and contemporary rhythms. Respecting the power of yesteryear, the instrumentation embraces past rock; however, and this is where the song becomes quite edgy, a modern-day cut of alternative rock bites in Liu’s vocals.
So, overall opinion of ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’? For me, listening to the song is not entirely a listening experience; it is an immersive experience. I feel the bad-ass attitude of Liu with her cheeky winks and rambunctious mischief, but amidst the attitude is a sophisticated soothing that simultaneously boosts an air-guitar strut and chilled-out “yeah, this works”.
Ghost of Panama have recently released their cover of John Cale’s ‘Paris 1919’, but I am eager to hear more original work and look forward to the upcoming single, ‘Hey, Cristiana!’. Until then, I know I’ll have this version of ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ on repeat.
