Inherit The Ashes – Idolmaker (2023)

With the raw angst of Lordi and the mellifluous metal flow of Rammstein (yes, heavy metal can be mellifluous), up-and-coming death metal trio Inherit The Ashes bring a powerful blast of aggression with their own chaotic flair. Formed in November 2022, drummer Norman Mann, guitarist Jan Feld and bassist/vocalist Nicolas Perrault (who happen to be members of Rage Of Samedi at the time) brought a new metal madness to the scene. The debut single ‘Florida Man’ was released in April 2023 to critical acclaim and international praise. Now, we’re taking a gander at their latest single ‘Idolmaker’.

Following the scorching ‘Florida Man’, Inherit The Ashes appear to adopt a softer, less intense tone in ‘Idolmaker’ with a more melodic opening to the track; oh, how wrong we were. Smooth and flowing, the harmonic guitar, bass and drums entice you into a hall of music with a big smile and extended hand… then, well, then it gets crazy.

Just as you enter the musical hall, it’s an assault on the senses. Perrault’s harsh screams are backed by hard-hitting bass and pounding guitars coming at you from all sides. Yet, despite the chaotic sound, the arrangement is united and harmonic in a way – like travelling on a dark rollercoaster not knowing what wind or twist is coming but knowing there is a steadiness on this soul-stirring soundscape.

While ‘Idolmaker’ has the same sense of ferocity, brutality, wildness and brashness as ‘Florida Man’, it is oddly united and whole in its untamed madness. Not sincere, sentimental or sensitive in its execution, Inherit The Ashes send a scorching message with ‘Idolmaker’. Interestingly, while this is a rapacious track, an obscure spirit-lifting sensation floods through the song with raw vivaciousness.

If you’re looking for something to hit you in the face with metal attitude, then look no further than Inherit The Ashes. One of the more exciting bands to cross our path this year and definitely one to watch.
