Following the well-received single, ‘Did You Think That I Was Lost?’, ‘I Should Have Asked Your Name’ is the second insight into Moult’s upcoming album, Stood Out In The Storm. Self-recorded, played and produced at Moult’s Cardiff home studio, Stood Out In The Storm is an expansion of his intimate sound with guitars and organs “…adding new depth and urgency to the sound”. In ‘I Should Have Asked Your Name’, a concoction of blues-inspired drums holds fast behind a rhythmic bass, with soaring guitars weaving through the melody with shimmering slices and twinkling taunts.
From the outset, ‘I Should Have Asked Your Name’ oozes soothing, languid, toe-tapping tranquillity as you slide across its kaleidoscopic sonic river. Moult’s rich vocals dance along the track, bringing tenderness and heart-warming charm; it’s as if you’re embracing an old friend while laughing along in conversation. Yet, as much as the track is light-hearted, this is only the surface-level beauty, with the lyricism and theme adding weightiness.
A song of lost moments, yearning, confusion, and that soul-stirring rush of regret when you miss your chance – you really should have asked their name. Moult explains: “A song exploring instant attraction and missed opportunity, resolving with love finding a way to wait for us and allowing us to meet again.”
