Jackson – Streamside Wager (2026)

The Kooks, Passenger, The Maccabees and Fat Boy Slim – what do they all have in common? Well, they’re from Brighton, of course. Today, another interesting hit from Brighton makes its way across our ears; welcome to Jackson. One of the emerging artists on the independent scene, producer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jackson might be a newbie, but he’s quickly carving a name for himself. Experimental and eclectic, Jackson’s sound is constantly evolving, binding something familiar with something unbelievably new. The latest addition to his discography is the single, ‘Streamside Wager’.

Already leaping from the 2024 indie-rock-esque single ‘Sitters’ to an R&B-dipped ‘Fox’, ‘Streamside Wager’ continues to define his melodic evolution with an indie-pop meets alternative rock style. Recorded and produced by Jackson, with mixing by Jake Stainer and mastering by Lewis Ford, the track is a concoction of Jackson’s acoustic guitar, drums and sweeping synths, with Frank Seradi’s bass guitar stepping along.

Mellifluous, harmonic and tranquil with a laid-back groove, ‘Streamside Wager’ is a track to make you smile – like sitting in the sunshine on a warm summer’s day. Yet, while rhythmic and calming, an odd sense of vulnerability glistens in the comfortable tune; the lyrics juxtapose the warmth with a sort of tension. Moreover, a tightness exists within the vocals, somewhat held back, bringing a palpable tension to the song.

Cleverly constructed, each note fully expresses the weightiness of the single’s theme. Jackson explains: “‘Streamside Wager’ explores the emotional contradictions of reconnecting with a past relationship… It’s a juxtaposing feeling of wanting to give all your love to someone while still wanting to keep everything for yourself. It’s a selfish, slightly lustful and confusing feeling.”

Alright, so what is my overall opinion of Jackson? Listening to ‘Streamside Wager’ alone, I find him a heartwarming indie artist, but without any real stand-out qualities. He’s an enjoyable few minutes of music. However, considering everything from the weighty theme to the emotional expression to the fact that each song is entirely different while retaining an odd similarity, Jackson isn’t just a light-hearted moment, he’s an interesting, inspiring and intriguing musician I plan to watch closely.
