JJ McGuigan – Disconnected (2022)

After receiving his first drum set at 13 years of age, JJ McGuigan discovered a passion for music that oozes from his engaging songs to our enthralled ears. Later, McGuigan picked up the guitar and at age 20 he began writing original songs for us to love. This is my introduction to JJ McGuigan, but he has been turning heads across the globe with features on Indie Spoonful, Jamsphere, Find No Enemy, Indie Pulse Music and Music Talkers. In fact, the accomplished artist is an award-winning songwriter who made it to the finals of the VH1 Save The Music Songwriting Contest. Come with us as we delve into his tune ‘Disconnected’.

Following his well-received EP Dissociative, ‘Disconnected’ is McGuigan’s first release since 2015. The first of three singles to be released in 2022, ‘Disconnected’ lies somewhere between Three Days Grace and Three Doors Down. A strong hard rock sound flows through the powerful melody with nostalgic charm; however, a modern-day slant makes the track pleasing to contemporary audiences as well as those who like a bit of the old stuff. Bold, dynamic and filled with raw attitude, McGuigan demonstrates an aggressive ferocity within the hard-hitting song.

Interestingly enough, while his melodies are hard-hitting, it is the lyricism that knocks you off your feet. An advocate for mental health awareness, JJ McGuigan’s music aims to reach out to others with open, honest communication. As with his EP Dissociative, ‘Disconnected’ touches on issues of depersonalisation, depression and anxiety, and does not trivialise these problems. Melancholic and dark, there is a sense of desperation in ‘Disconnected’; however, the harsh ferocity of the single brings along an empowering quality.
