Josh Allen and the Whisky Brothers – Keep It In The Ground! (2022)

The world has changed a lot over the last few years due to politics, the climate crisis and the pandemic. This has resulted in a change in how we view the world and this can be seen in the shift of Josh Allen and the Whisky Brothers’ sound. Moving away from the debauchery and hedonism of their previous releases, ‘Keep It In The Ground!’ showcases a concerned focus shift.

While the focus of their music has changed, its firm roots in rock and roll remain the same. The single is the first from their new EP Still Alive which comes after the band took a hiatus, as life and family took precedence. Since they started playing together in 2007, the band has released two full-length albums and is ready to unleash their new view on life through their music.

‘Keep It In The Ground!’ reaches out through the opening with a wonderful rush of classic soft rock. There is a touch of old-school protest song to this track that brings a retro vibe to the flow. The guitars sweep through the soundscape like bodies marching down the road in protest. There is a rise to the beats on the chorus that brings a toe-tapping edge to the melody. Later in the track, there is a wonderful guitar riff that soars out, taking you along for the ride. The drums have a push to them at times that make you want to clap with them, before they drop to bolster the guitar line. Through the melody, you can tell that there is a deep message woven into the track that you need to take the time to listen to.

As the music sweeps through you with a classic rock touch, the vocals bring a plea to move on from fossil fuel. The lyrics have some stark messaging that is softened by the catchiness of the performance and the sweep of the rock guitars. Through the verses, the band shines a light on the suffering of the world and how corporations don’t care as long as they make a profit. The chorus takes the catchiness to another level and makes you want to call out with them. The vocals are undeniable in their delivery as they turn our attention to the cleaner options out there. Later in the track, the band is joined by the voices of children that add something to the power of the single.

Josh Allen and the Whisky Brothers have an important message to impart with ‘Keep It In The Ground!’ while getting you hooked to their new sound. The melody has a touch of protest songs of old in the guitars as they sweep through you. The lyrics are powerful as they consider the world we live in and the alternatives for the future.
