Kargyr – Chronophobic (2022)

If you are in the mood for metal music like you have never heard it before, you are definitely in the right place. This is exactly what Kargyr has to offer with his rather epic single ‘Chronophobic’. With a blend of progressive metal, Eastern harmonies and heavily distorted guitars, he has your head banging to the sound of the ethereal and the evil.

A metalhead since his teenage years, Kargyr has been drumming since age 12 and playing the electric guitar for almost as long. At the start of 2020, he set himself a new goal, to put together everything he has learnt about music and production and release his own EP. Since then, he made a recording studio out of a closet and combined exotic tones with head banging metal goodness.

‘Chronophobic’ strums to life with a wonderful mixture of Eastern tones and building progressive rock. There is something unique about the melodic movement that pushes you into the single. You can feel a sense of something building through the music, but at this point, you can’t quite put your finger on what that is. The driving opening drops for a plucked line that brings a greater fusion of tones, before you are hit upside the head by the metal tones. The sudden burst of heavy metal takes you by surprise but in the best possible way. The energy from this section of the melody pounds against your chest before dropping to those plucked notes and sliding into melodic metal. This is a melody that is packed with twists and turns keeping you on your toes so you never quite know what is going to happen. This twisting movement makes the single wonderfully unique and unlike any other metal track you have heard before.

When the burst of metal first makes itself known, the vocals scream out to match. The death metal scream of the vocals is fantastic and rides the energy of the melody to shake up your brain. The initial vocals are a dark and sinister entity that cries out into the soundscape. Later, when the melody drops for a more melodic flow, the vocals smooth to match, bringing a softer and calmer feeling. The interplay between the different vocal movements is like a call and response between the two entities of the single. This also showcases the versatility of Kargyr’s vocals and musical ability.

Kargyr takes us through melodic twists and turns while bringing a call and response to the metal vocals of ‘Chronophobic’. The melody keeps you on your toes as it moves from smooth fusion to blasting death metal and back again. The vocals are a masterpiece of versatility as they scream into the void only to calm and slide with melodic goodness.
