Larry Mossburg – Statement Year (2026)

With his latest single ‘Statement Year’, Ohio-based rapper Larry Mossburg wants to motivate us to persevere. He announces himself on the track with a reserved confidence, surrounded by a chopped-up sample well programmed to circle his voice in a coronation melody. Banging kick drums and accompanying bass lines plunge the single into a determinative energy, with Mossburg declaring, “It’s a statement year /yeah I got my foot in gear”. Mossburg places us in his journey with lightly sketched on-the-come-up bars like, “Lil dog in a big league /had to get my weight up /so I’m eating more pedigree”, his voice laid back and muscular.

His delivery creates this towering essence over festive production, which serves to empower and have the listener feel like it’s their time. Inspired by the coming-of-age folklore of rapper J. Cole’s earlier releases, Mossburg raps about taking advantage of a star-making moment. Both he and his friend, song engineer Ryan, achieve the sound of motivation.

Cole is beloved in hip-hop because he places enough narrative details and moment after moment of personal introspection into his songs, and his journey can feel like yours or vice versa. Unfortunately, on this one-verse track, storytelling – making people feel the narrative through communicating the stakes with vulnerability – is missing from ‘Statement Year’.

Mossburg raps like he’s gotten through the year and found success. With lines like, “Stack ya money to the ceiling /got me going hard /got me losing all these feelings”, the song descends into something that feels like we’ve skipped over the journey. There are moments of dimension when Mossburg warns: “And when it’s your time bro /make sure you keep the grass in your field low“ suggesting he’s experienced betrayal. Lines about what inspired the need for a statement year would make the song feel less like a scrapbook of successful moments, and more of a journey people can embody as their own.

‘Statement Year’ by Larry Mossgrove feels like an attempt to replicate the spirit of the rapper who inspired it. But there’s more to Mossgrove than what’s on this single.
