At the core of the song, ‘Only Love’ confronts a familiar sentiment: ”…the tendency to mistake a woman’s ambition and independence for emotional distance…” Yet, while there is a link to the challenging ideas of frustration and compromise, the track retains a strong sense of empowerment, strength and self-belief. A movement from “restriction to liberation… a powerful statement on self-worth, resilience and the courage to leave what no longer serves you.”
Lyrically, ‘Only Love’ is intriguing, almost like having a conversation about being the best you can be and living the best life you can live. Melodically, it is as powerful as an evolution in Leila Jane’s sound; a pivot to a new chapter in her musical journey. Instead of the soulful, indie-folk tunes on her 2024 album Untangled, ‘Only Love’ shifts to a pop-driven rush of electronic beats and smooth synths. Add Leila Jane’s rich, honey-dripped vocals to dance across the kaleidoscopic melody, and you have a song that is bright, fun, easy, and perfect to twirl about to.
Showing her versatility as an artist, I feel this new pop direction is a great chapter to explore. I look forward to more from this talented musician.
