Until They Burn Me – Addict (2026)
While Until They Burn Me technically formed in 2021, with their discography hailing back to 2024’s debut album, Mud Music, Cody Carlyle and Travis Jordan have far more to their names. For over 30 years, the pair have played and composed music, formerly in the band The Dry Season. Today, however, we take a glance not at their old stuff – although I’ll probably make my way to anything about The Dry Season; rather, we turn up our speakers to Until They Burn Me and the new single, ‘Addict’.
An eclectic combination of garage rock, Americana, punk, folk and good old-fashioned murder ballads, Until They Burn Me is a swirling pool of colourful genres ready for a listener’s enjoyment. Self-recorded and produced in home studios from Ferndale, Washington, and Cincinnati, Ohio, ‘Addict’ steps away from a heavy alternative rock tone to something faster, punchier, and much more hard-rock.
From the outset, I mean pretty much immediately, Until They Burn Me assaults you with crashing drums, a stomping bass, and scorching guitars. It’s as if that colourful pool of music is poured over your head while the lads twirl you about in a hard-hitting rage. Angsty and aggressive, ‘Addict’ is made for the mosh pits, ready to push and pull you from one tumultuous wall to the other.
Melodically, the arrangement is frenzied and somewhat chaotic, but even with the shouting vocals, a strange sense of vulnerability and welcome. Aligning with the theme of addiction, its hidden understanding is veiled by the chaos. The band explains: “The feel of ‘Addict’ is nostalgic, particularly for the kids of the 80s and 90s. It’s a sound we grew up with, but with lyrical creativity about an often too painful subject… At its heart, it’s about the paradox of both loving and hating one’s addiction… Sometimes we love our addiction, and sometimes we just love to hate it.”
